We are delighted to welcome you to attend the DMD Educational course titled “Increasing awareness and understanding of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) 2024”, offered to you by Newgiza University School of Medicine and Myo-care Foundation, and supported by a grant from Pfizer Inc. This course is submitted for accreditation from the UEMS.

The course will take place from November 10th to 13th, 2024 at the Newgiza University’s campus and community hospital.

Our course’s schedule is packed with insightful sessions, a clinic hands-on training workshop, and networking opportunities.

This educational program targets healthcare professionals in the Middle East to improve the early diagnosis, evidence-based management of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in the region and promote research and precision Medicine for DMD patients.

Goal

Board

Prof. Dr. Ahmed Sameh Farid

  • Founder and President of Newgiza University, Prof. Farid was appointed as the Minister of Health, on Jan 30th, 2011, elected as Member of the Parliament in 2010, Chairman of the Education and Research Committee in the Egyptian parliament, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Kasr Al Aini, Cairo University from 2006 till January 29th, 2011. Prof. A. Sameh Farid was elected in 2011 as Secretary-General of the Arab Federation of Otorhinolaryngological Society (ARABFOS).

  • Prof. Farid was also a member of the Medical Sector Executive Board of the High Supreme Council of the Egyptian Universities. He was the Chairman of the Board of the Technical Medical Institute of the Ministry of Health and Member of the Board of the General Organization of Teaching Hospitals and Institutes of the Ministry of Health in 2010.

Prof. Dr. Lamis Ragab

  • NGU Vice President

  • Dr. Ragab is the Founding Vice President of Newgiza University since 2016, and a full professor at Cairo University from 1995 till present. She graduated in 1976 from the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University. She obtained a master’s degree in 1980 and a doctorate degree in Pediatrics in 1984.

  • She acted as the founding Dean of Education at the newly established Armed Forces College of Medicine (2013-2016) and the Secretary-General of the Medical Sector Committee at the Supreme Council of Universities (2012-2016).

  • Dr. Ragab has a long-standing experience in Quality Assurance in education. She served as a member of the National Quality Assurance and Accreditation Committee (Executive Office), the Monitoring & Evaluation of New Programs Project, the Continuous Improvement and Qualifying for Accreditation Project (CIQAP), and the team for development of the National Academic Standards for Medicine, and the RUMP (Reform of the Undergraduate Medical Program) committee.

Prof. Dr. Lamiaa Mohsen

  • Dean of School of Medicine at NGU and Chairman of the program

  • National and international expert who worked with various governmental and international agencies in the field of health care, education, maternal and child welfare and human resource development.

  • In September 2016, Lamiaa was appointed as the Founding Dean for Faculty of Medicine, Newgiza University which was the first School of Medicine in Egypt to implement the modular integrated curriculum and assessment.

  • Prof. Lamiaa is a member of the RUMP (Reform of Undergraduate Medical Program) committee shared among experts in the preparatory steps for the implementation of the new undergraduate medical curriculum that started in September 2019 in all Egyptian Medical schools.

  • Prof. Lamiaa is a member of the Pediatric Medical Council in the Arab Board since 2014. In this position she is responsible for the preparation, participating and evaluating OF postgraduate training and Assessment in all Arab Countries as well as accreditation of hospitals as training sites.

Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ihab

  • Principle Investigator

  • Ahmed Ihab Abdelaziz is an Associate Professor of Human Genetics, at School of Medicine, Newgiza University, and the Director of the Health Sciences Research Center. He is also a visiting Professor at the Institute of Pathology, University of Heidelberg, Germany.

  • His Clinical Practice is in Human Medical Genetics, Genetic Counseling, Diagnosis, and therapy. He is the head of the Molecular Diagnostic Unit at the Genetic Diagnostic Center, and a consultant for Medical Genetics & Genetic Counseling at Prime Clinics, Egypt.

  • His research focuses on the role of non-coding transcriptome in liver, muscle, and Cardiac pathology. He has more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals (H-index 21) and has an approved patent by the European Patent Office in 2024

Dr. Rasha El Sherif

  • Scientific Director of the program

  • Rasha El Sherif, is consultant of Neuromuscular disorders and Neurology Module Lead in NewGiza University, trained on the genetics of muscle disease, visiting scientist at National Institute of Neuroscience, NCNP, Japan.

  • She completed her MD thesis on the genetics of Muscular Dystrophy at NCNP, under supervision of her mentor Prof. Dr. Ichizo Nishino.

  • In 2000, she received a grant from NCNP, to establish the first Neurogenetics lab in Neurology Department, Ain Shams University.

  • In 2013, she received a fellowship to study registry of rare disorders in Newcastle University.

  • In 2019, she founded the MyoCare Foundation and the “Egyptian Neuromuscular Registry” holding 2500 NMD patients.

  • In 2023, she co-founded with Dr. Ichizo Nishino, the Myology Unit in the Al-Hadi NMC, Iraq. Currently she is the Chair “Myology Developments” in WMS and leading the African & Middle East Network.
